Confederate Flag

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tommy DeFoe wore his Southern pride on his Confederate flag belt buckle Wednesday as he argued in federal court that a school dress code banning such items violated his free speech rights.

“I am fighting for my heritage and my rights as a Southerner and an American,” said the lanky DeFoe, 18, during a break in his trial.

DeFoe says his great-great uncle served in the Confederate army and “died for the South” in the Civil War.

I disagree with dress codes and not allowing a flag to be worn. Whether your Dominican, Mexican, Italian, Irish, Chinese or anything else, you can wear a shirt representing your country. For Christ sake, half our country doesn’t even speak English, and yet an American boy can’t wear something that represents a part of the United States history. The confederate flag represents more then anti-this or that. It represents people who fought and died for what they believed in, no matter what it may be. Although I hate the idea of slavery and discrimination, I love the idea of fighting for what you believe in, thats what made this country in the first place. If you can’t handle freedom of expression, go back to your own country. When I see someone wearing a French tee shirt, I don’t tell him to F off, as long as you salute Old Glory first and foremost, for this is where you live and the greatest country on the planet. And don’t forget it.

  1. Political correctness has got to go. Freedom of speech Is our right, not a priveledge. I believe the Stars and Bars is an important symbol of the south, and represents heritage, not hate. It’s time people grow up, and stop using political correctness as an exuse to remove things they do not like, or agree with. Whats next, banning cowboy boot’s, or bib overall’s, or turbans ?
